Ok, I think I need a new transmission. I have a 2000 Excursion 7.3. I towed my boat to the lake and backed down the ramp. I launched the boat just fine, however when I put the truck into drive nothing happened. No forward motion. The truck actually moved backwards into the water. I shifted in and out of drive multiple times and shifted through all gears to try to move forward. NOTHING. I had the truck pulled out and off of the ramp with a skylit fork lift. Very embarrassing. Anyhow, I checked the Trans fluid and all seemed normal. Nothing smelled burnt and the fluid level was normal. The truck would not shift into drive. It would shift into reverse. And I could move it slightly forward with idle. So I had the truck towed to a local service station. When I went back a few days later the truck shifted into drive just fine. By then the Trans had cooled and I was able to drive it back home. So my thought is that when the Trans heated up it somehow wouldn't engage into drive when under a load (such as driving out of a steep boat launch).
Two questions I have to ask. First, do you think my Trans is toast? Secondly, should I get a Ford rebuild or a BTS? Is the BTS worth the high cost?

If you find out that you do indeed need a new transmission, then yes the BTS is worth the money. Ford remans have had terrible quality lately. I installed two Ford remans in a space of 6 months before switching to BTS. I was actually sent three Ford remans. First one was shipped with a hole in the bellhousing and was not installed. Second one was rebult without a spring for the 3rd gear valve body and burned the clutch pack. Third one grenaded. I did not bother with failure analysis for the third one. Switched to BTS and couldn't be happier.
Take a look at Sam Wyse https://wyseauto.repair/ Worth every penny. When I looked at the big three trans builders BTS, John Woods, Sam Wyse. I found on other forums that BTS wasn't taking care of warranty claims in a decent amount of time. Some were waiting up to six months for repairs. Some local racer / sled pullers out here in AZ told me the same. And then John Woods trans are over priced for what you get and similar complaints about warranty and quality concerns.
Do your due diligence and do some research. Don't take my word for it. But one thing I can say is that Sam personally calls you several times after your purchase and asks if theirs any problems. Just last month I called him about my Precision Converter not giving the stall I requested. He asked me for the serial number of the converter and found out there was a bad batch of stators that Precision released within the serial numbers that were in my truck. Three days later I had a brand new converter and he also provided trans fluid to do the replacement. Even offered to pay the labor to switch them out. Now that's customer service!!

Did you check the fluid with the transmission in park and the engine idling?
If the fluid level is right, it could be loose feed bolts. These bolts are located in the trans case, under (above?) the valve body. You have to remove the pan and the valve body, and the three feed bolts will be right there. If they loosen you can get the symptoms that you're seeing.

That looks like a pretty good solution, how did you do the shipping?

I did check the trans fluid with the engine idling and it looked good. I will check those bolts.
Mine did that years ago. Then it started working again for a week or so. Then It wouldn't back out my drive.I let it set till Gene came over to tow it to JW and it drove fine. I put a new trans in it, but I wouldn't go with JW. I had bad warranty problems with him. I never checked my feed bolts, that could of been the problem. I had a noisey convertor since day one when I bought it. Ford wouldn't change it out then. Years later they started doing so.
If you do replace trans, be sure to replace the cooler too. This came up in another thread recently, Recap; stock cooler is dog-**** and cannot be properly flushed, replace with updated cooler along with new trans.

If I change out the Trans what type of converter do I need? I understand I need a 6.0 cooler but not sure what converter I need. Thanks

Does anyone have a pic of the feed bolts that could be loose? Thanks
