ok, this is what happened yesterday. literally out of no where when I was making a right turn going like 2 mph. I heard a aluminum clanging sound. (sounded like a thin piece of metal or something was scraping and bouncing off of the ground). The truck also shuddered a little bit as if when you do not give enough gas in a stick shift car and it jumps or shudders. It went away but I pulled over. I looked underneath and nothing. everything was fine. I listened to the truck from the wheel well on the drivers side and it did sound a little louder than it has before with the ticking and it kind of had a gurgling sound.(like a diesel or when the bottom end is going. not loud at all though) I drove forward and back and I heard the same sound as before when I was turning but way quieter. At this time the truck was probably driving for about 3 hrs on and off. I drove home and it took like 15 min. on the way home the truck had a very little vibration. (like going over p gravel). it had all kinds of power though, no hesitations, no stalling, no engine codes, no nothing and idled fine. As I turned into the drive the clang noise came back and my the time I got to the garage (maybe 100ft) all hell broke loose. it got super loud as if something was on the inside of the motor pounding to get out. I went out this morning to see if a pully was loose or the plugs popped out but all was good. I started it back up and it was relatively quiet. ( I guess the normal 5.4 injector sounds maybe) I drove up and down the street and it was fine. as it started to warm up the noise would get louder and sound like a quiet diesel again. these videos are of today after it got warmed up. Ok. this is my question. Is this the dreaded 5.4 tick and clang that need the front of the engine redone and to check the hydraulic lifters and rockers? O. their was no engine light on. No codes. It was running fine. Seriously. it just happened. Maybe my ears are not trained yet to here the correct signs yet.=left thank you
Clangs and no codes are not usually assoc with timing
You say you were turning at slow speed . Sometimes thats a wheel bearing . Hard to tell from here . Try some low speed turning .
If chain eating at timing cover due to tensioners gasket leaking and chain whipping-- breaking guides . I would drop oil pan and look for plastic and sparkles of ground aluminum . You then would clean oil pu as it will be full of ground up plastic fibers reducing oil flow to engine . That means a full timing job .
But usually you will get codes .
Inspect front wheels for wheel bearing failure .
That is most definitely VCT solenoid noise (the rattling just above idle). Mine has always done that as well. Never had a problem as a result. The video you took under the hood definitely revealed some cam phaser knock, too, which is a separate noise from the other 2 videos.
where is the best place to buy the motorsport timing kit?
where is the best place to buy the vct's?
do I need to use the 2v steel valve guides?
thanks
Your best bet to get OEM parts at the absolute best price is, believe it or not, Amazon. Not sure what you mean buy the "2V steel valve guides", but if you're referring to the steel tensioners, then yes, I'd highly recommend them.
Fyi, I purchased all the parts to do my timing set before I realized my engine was essentially shot and I needed a complete motor. I still have both Motorcraft VCT solenoids (newer updated version) brand new in the packaging, as well as a brand new Melling M360HV oil pump. I couldn't return them because I was past the return date when I decided to just buy a remanufactured motor. If you are in need of a them send me a PM.
pm sent. thanks
yes, I was talking about the tensioners( my fault). does it matter what year? and what is the part number
thanks
PM replied to. The proper cast iron tensioners for the 5.4L 3v motor are from Melling (Motorcraft no longer supplies them, but I'm fairly positive that they were made by Melling for Motorcraft/Ford). The part #'s are BT402 and BT403.
I have an 06 F150 XLT 4x4 5.4 136k - at the time, now almost 138k - that was making some wicked engine noise. Took truck in as I didn't have time or desire to do cam phaser work. They checked the oil pressure and it was very low. They found the pan to have a lot a sludge in it, cleaned every thing up and reassembled without new phaser parts. Oil pressure back up to where is should be. Noise is gone, truck runs great. Food for thought. BTW it is for sale :-)
