The hardest part of this is releasing the front "quick disconnect". It's having the right tool. I have a collection of those tools. All of them were inexpensive, and just did not fit & work well. All of my cheap disconnect tools were from auto parts stores, amazon, ebay, et cetera. So I struggled for hours, for a job which should have taken minutes. Does anyone know what the part number is to the tool from Ford? Does Ford make a tool which actually works?
Yea I did mine too and the hardest part was definitely the disconnects, as it usually is. However, I did my GF's on her 06 explorer 4.0 and it was a MASSIVE pain in the ***. Such a terrible design and filter placement. You almost need to have the thing on lift to be able to get leverage. Especially when it has not been done in 130k on a Montana truck. Ridiculous.
I hate fuel filter "quick" disconnects. Doesn't matter what vehicle. But Ford really said 'eff you' on those explorers. Just give it a google, watch the video, and you will see how dumb the placement is. No room at all.
In all these years, nobody has ever recommended a trick to make this job easier. Those disconnect tools all are hit and miss. Even with a collection of the tools, you struggle. I remember forum posts showing how people actually cut off the disconnect and used hose and clamps to replace it.
With the Explorer, I had the same problem.
It may be easier on a lift where you can walk under the car instead of crawling in on your back.
Just break the tabs and buy new ones. Measure your fuel line first to know whether you need the 3/8" or 5/16". Get the pink ones
Do you have a pic of your truck, with the fuel lines cut, and pink repair splices taking their place? It would really help us to visualize the procedure.
there are SEVERAL types of filter clamps used over the years.. The INTERNAL alligator teeth that need a special tool to remove are the hard ones...... the pink slip in units mentioned above a simple to remove and normally NOT broken , needing replace. ....... fifty150 , look at your own photos on the back side of the filter ... pink clamp.
