Yes, the 226 engines were red in 1950.
I found an untouched area behind the draft tube on my engine's valve access plate that was still a bright red under the grime. Knowing that it darkened a bit over time, the best color match paint I found was the red spray enamel from Tractor Supply for a Massey Furguson tractor. They sell it right on the shelves. The paint color holds up fine after six years and counting, and has darkened a bit too.
