1992 engine swap

I have a 1992 Ranger rear-wheel drive with a dead 2.3L and manual transmission. Can anyone tell me if I can drop a 2.5L from a 1998-2000 Ranger into my 1992 Ranger to replace the bad 2.3L that it has? Everything looks the same. Are there any electrical or computer issues I might be missing?

Unless the ignition and efi are the same, (which they aren't) you will have issues.

Despite appearances it is not likely this is a straightforard swap, a y2kish motor will be from an OBD2 EFI system whereas your '92 is an OBD1. The wiring on these motors are not compatible at all but the 1st rule of motor swaps is to never use any wiring on the donor motor anyway, but thus is likely to be complicated further by the presence of sensors or systems(ignition, EGR) that are not at all the same as what your truck has and you couldn't make those systems work if you wanted to.

Years ago on my previous 1990 Ranger I successfully pulled a 2.9 manual shift and replaced it with a 4.0 automatic using essentially all of the wiring/engine management system forward of the firewall from the donor vehicle without issue. The donor was the same year Ranger.

Key words: "same year". Unless the OP wants to swap pretty much everything electric or electronic from the donor truck, this will be next to impossible.
