battery change

Planning a battery change on a 2016 Lariat soon. On some older vehicles, we always hooked up a small lawn tractor battery first through the cigarette lighter so as not to lose the radio presets. Is this necessary on a 2016, or will any other badthings happen when the truck battery is disconnected and there is no 12volts present for a few minutes?

I think the Duralast Gold batteries from Autozone are a good battery and the fact it is easy to warranty if it does fail. Used it on my last truck and liked it. I also went with higher CCA which helped out a lot. I plan on going this route when I replace my battery. It is the only part I will ever buy from AZ.

don’t recall if I lose the radio presets in my 2006 or 2011 F350’s when i change out the batteries (or they die). I don’t think i did in the 2011 though.

Since vehicles nowadays are basically big computers, i think it’s good to “reboot” them once and awhile, so if it were me, I would let it go completely dead. Who knows, you may even find better radio stations......

Didn’t loose any radio presets when I changed mine last year.

It might depend on how long you leave it without power, but my impression is that a bunch of things get reset after the power has been off for more than "X" minutes, but I don't know what X is. For example, you can reset the learned programming for the transmission by disconnecting the power for a bit.

Just wondering why you would change out a battery that is only 2-3 years old? Most of them last ~ 10 years these days - heck, I recently changed the battery in my old John Deere diesel recently. It was a cheap Walmart battery that lasted 13 years.

10 years is unlikely, most of us are getting max 3 years on the one battery. Don't attempt to backfired power through a 12v outlet in the truck without the primary battery attached. You will backfeed to the PCM and the SJB and things will happen. The battery also does need a BMS reset after changing. If you get the battery at the dealership they know the correct procedure.

Is there a similar problem with those battery memory savers that connect to the OBDII port?

Yes. Backfeeding through a SJB is never a good idea. There was a TSB in regards to trucks that continued to run after key was removed. Due to devices plugged into the 12v outlet without backfeed protection.

Huh. Don't need any special dealer only jiggery-pokery when replacing a battery on the Ranger, but it does have a routine to go through in the manual, and a period of re-learning (meaning hard shifts) for a while.

I think I have a battery starting to go south but it would be nice to run a parasitic load test without losing that memory. If one is really careful with the DVOM probes, it will keep memory alive during the milli-amp draw testing won't it??

The manufacturers sure have made what was once a simple task into kind of a headache at best!

My general rule of thumb for a battery is 5-6 years. Shorter if the conditions are difficult, and maybe a bit longer if it's had an easy life. If I have a battery still working after 6 years, you can bet that I'm shopping for one.

Depends on the vehicle. Different marques have different procedures. Some high end luxury vehicles, disconnecting the battery means a trip to the dealer! Things like power windows or the air conditioning will be completely inop until it gets scanned. Nice, huh?

Good info about the battery and the battery management system in the owners manual.

After battery replacement, or in some cases after charging the battery with an external charger, the battery management system requires eight hours of vehicle sleep time to relearn the battery state of charge. During this time your vehicle must remain fully locked with the ignition switched off.

When the battery is disconnected or a new battery is installed, the engine must relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy for optimum driveability and performance. Flexible fuel vehicles (FFV) must also relearn the ethanol content of the fuel for optimum driveability and performance.
To restore the settings, do the following:
  1. Apply the parking brake.
  1. Shift into park (P) or neutral (N).
  1. Switch off all accessories.
  1. Press the brake pedal and start your vehicle.
  1. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. While the engine is warming up, complete the following: Reset the clock. Reset the power windows bounce-back feature. See Power Windows. Reset the radio station presets. See General Information.
  1. Allow the engine to idle for at least one minute.
  1. Drive the vehicle at least 10 mi (16 km) to completely relearn the idle trim and fuel trim strategy.
