I have a 51 f1 and need a tilt column. what length is correct? I want a tilt column with column shift key or no key
is the ididit column worth the big price tag or is the summit column just as good for half the price?
Find out who makes the column summit sells or ask them if the internals are plastic or metal. There are articles on the web about cheaper offshore columns having plastic knuckles that fall apart and could cause loss of steering.
I stick with factory columns, cheap and no worries about losing steering.
I use different columns for different applications, and sometimes I modify the columns. What I do is get the seat in the vehicle, use a broomstick with a mock steering wheel on it and get the wheel where you want it. Measure how long the broom stick is and you have your length. Length you can use depends on clearances in the engine compartment, what steering setup you are using and if it is a column shift or floor shift vehicle.
Also my columns are all swap meet items, so I am not always sure what they came from, only general year range. Truck #1 I have a 1965 olds cultass column, truck #2 I think it is a 70s cutlass column. Lots of pictures in my build threads, and in truck #2 I first mocked up a 70-72 cutlass non tilt and then found a tilt at a swap meet.
