Going to install a block heater/cable in my 2018 F-250 6.7 diesel engine. Mine did not come with a block heater, even though I bought it here in Northern Illinois. What should I put on the threads of the block heater? I looked at the video, but there was no mention of the thread treatment used in the installation. Thanks
Sure you don't just need the wire that plugs into the element on the passenger side of the block and runs out a tow hook hole? Make sure you get the loom to cover it and tie it up correctly. Its a rubber boot and just clicks on.
Per the Ford parts person my 6.7 does not have a block heater built in. They showed me the truck came less"Immersion Heater" on the parts screen
They said I needed the cord and the heater, and the installation could be quite messy since its opening a freeze plug and draining the block.
Ford 5C3Z-6B018-DA - Cord $90.28
Ford 5C3Z-6B051 - Immersion heater $37.70

just to be sure, I’d double check to make sure it’s really not already in your engine. The thread below has a picture of the element location if you do already have it.
I was just looking at the Ford Body builders guide, the was a chart the showed when the block heater was needed
It said at
0 deg F not needed
-10 deg F sugested
-20 deg F. Recomended
under -20 deg F strongly recomended.
Thought it was interesting

I double checked and there is no block heater, only a plug.
your truck had the plug/cord but no element in the block? IF this is the case, its the exact opposite of what most people have - block plug installed but with no cord (that how mine came in California)
What type of sealant should I use on the block heater element?
Since no one has actually answered your question yet....... use either RTV or teflon tape. Either will do the job just fine. (if you use the tape make sure to wrap it the right way)
If you are doing the job without draining the coolant then I say use the tape, if you are draining then either will work.
Don’t use RTV. Use either Teflon tape or the white Teflon based plumbers pipe sealant. RTV won’t prevent the threads from galling whereas the other two will.
Definitely the white plumbers pipe sealant, drain the coolant, thread in and tighten, refill with same coolant. Remember there are two tanks on a diesel for coolant. I am not sure but I think you only have to drain the main. It will be a heck of a mess unless you drain, and getting it to thread in can be a pain whilst getting a bath in the orange stuff, Anyone on here able to confirm its the main tank on passenger, that drains the block and that area, vs the passenger side tank?
This video is of a 2016 6.7L. Ive used this method and it works perfectly. Lost less than a cup of coolant. The wire for the heater is routed slightly different on the 18 but its very close. I use Permatex thread sealant.
