Morning all, I have a 2000 f250, with a 7.3L. I had major brake squel, and talking to a mechanic friend of mine, he said it could be cheap pads. I did check them and they had a thin piece of metal that was attached to them which was loose in parts, so I figured this is where the harmonics were coming from. So I replaced them with a good quality set of pads, but I'm still getting a squeel. I coated the outsides in copper grease, but to no avail. Any suggestions? The noise when I stop is driving me batty! Thanks in advance!
Squeal is the result of vibration. I’ve never been a fan of new pads on used rotors. At the very least get the rotors turned, but I always install new rotors at every brake change. It’s cheap when compared to how an extra foot or two of stopping distance can lead to a collision.
Brake pad compound can cause noise. The more metallic the compound, the more noise. You can add anti-rattle grease on the back of the pads. Did you install new retaining clips when you replaced the pads? Did you bed in the new pads?
cut the rotors
minimum cut to trailing edge of brake pads
anti vibration compound to rear of brake pads.
new brake mounting hardware
remove dirt/rust from brake slots on mounting brackets.
