The power steering in my 05’ F250 will growl/grown every now and then when I’m pulling into or out of a parking space and there is a lot or turning going on. Would flushing the hydroboost system help with this?
It reminds of how a standard power steering pumps sounds when it’s low on fluid, or the belt is slipping. Is that normal for those Hydroboost systems?
It may or may not, depending on the cause of the noise. it's worth doing the flush, but it's important to remove the reservoir and clean it out, especially if it has a screen in the supply port to the pump. A restriction due to debris can cause cavitation, and checking for the amount of debris can be a tell of hose condition.
also if its ever gotten low enough that it could have sucked some air into the system this can sometimes get stuck in the pump and block it from pulling new fluid... theres a tool you can get that screws on where the cap is to put a vacuum on the system to help draw out the air... or you can get the universal one thats just a conical plug with a hose on it... Mustangs use both styles of pumps, the gravity fed hydroboost and the plain jane noisy power steering pump that was found on the 7.5/7.3 superdutys in 98... theyre both known for having problems getting them to bleed the air out once its in the system... only way to get the air out when it gets trapped is to put it under vacuum... itll be noisier while your pulling that vacuum and going through the bleeding proceedure but once you get the air out and release the vacuum it should be quiet afterwards...
thats provided you have indeed gotten air stuck in there...
Well, I ran about 3 qts of Mobil1 ATF through the system until it started coming out clean looking. Unfortunately, it didn't make a big of different. It's still a little noisy when I'm turning the week.
