Tuning dierection

Hi, so I'm looking to get a tune on my truck. For the money I can get a programmer or for the same money get a couple tools and learn something.

I have been researching the crap out if this. And I'm down two options

1: moates quater course and tuner pro
The good is it plugs right in. Does it all
The bad I have to go into the ecu and use the j3 port

2: get a j2534 pass threw box hook it to my laptop and get tuner pro.
1: will this work??? Can I read and write to the pcm this way???

2: lots of money. But a good investment as it is a great tool for diagnostics and work with lots of cars.

I know there is a big learning curve here. This was much easier with my Audi there is one cable and the software is easy obtainable. Can you guys let me know if these will work???

it all depends on what truck and engine you have.
most diesels are as simple as either a plug and play chip, or a tuner that goes through the OBD port.
gas engines are usually done through the OBD port. unless you have an older vehicle

I'm sorry I didn't include that info. It's a 02 f150 5.4. I'm not looking to get more power just more drivability. It has no power down low. And it shifts like a granny.

I found sniper software threw tuningtools.com. I think it's the best for my dollar and somtsomet I can do easily

mike at 5 star tuning writes tunes for the SCT X4. what they do is reprogram the trans shift points, and also modifies the fuel/timing of the engine.
give him a call, or drop an email and explain what you are looking for. his tunes made a night and day difference to my 2014 with the 6.2 engine, and i know a few people that have his tunes in 5.4 powered trucks and they say the same thing.

Thanks for that and I will give them a buzz. I like the sniper set up as it's a pass threw box and it's something I can customize and play with myself. It's also a safe way to get into self tuning. Witch is my goal. But I would call the sniper software like riding a bike with training wheels.
