i wouldn't go for hypertech. go diablo or sct. these may cost a little more, but custom tunes can be uploaded into them if you want to maximize the power out of every performance part.

They are more semi-custom as the tuner doesn't drive the vehicle. However you tell them what you want and what you have done already, then they use their experience to write a tune.

Hypertech is a decent choice in a chevy, but there are better options for fords. SCT would be a good choice if you want plug in convenience but sniper or the really expensive SCT writer program if you want to get waist deep into performance. The nice side to the ones you can write the tunes for is, you can make basic files and then when you get the time/money you can play around on a dyno getting it dialed in.

I recommend the SCT X3 tuner with custom tunes. 5 Star Tuning is where I purchased my SCT tuner and Mike is awesome. It's only a few dollars more for the custom tunes. I opted for the 87 octane - economy tune, the 89 octane - towing tune, and the 93 octane - performance tune. If down the line you make additional upgrades to your truck, just call Mike and tell him the details. He can email you a new tune(s) that you can download yourself. In other words, the SCT tuners can be updated as you update your truck.

How do you like the Livewire? I'll be choosing between it or the X3 come beginning of summer. I like the idea of having adjustable parameters on the dash in front of me and the ability to monitor things, as well as the fact that it stores 3 factory tunes + 3 custom tunes.

I love the SCT 93 octane performance tune! It's the only tune that I've uploaded. I haven't mounted the Livewire yet because I'm still trying to figure out the best place to mount it on the dash. I also need to contact Mike to determine what the various parameters do before I go playing with them. The unit didn't come with detailed explanations of the various settings but it was very easy to upload the tune (less than 10 minutes). The unit is very user friendly and comes highly recommended.

Is there a significant 'seat 'o the pants' improvement versus without the tune?

Night and day difference! The no-response takeoff of the OEM tune is now very responsive. The cruising power is much better and my transmission rarely up-shifts anymore. I only lost .5 MPG going to the 93 octane performance tune. I am very confident that I would gain MPG if I used the 87 octane economy tune.

I agree 100%! There are many quality products on the market and time spent researching is time well spent. The Hypertech has a great reputation, which is well deserved.
