Temps drop to 15-20 degrees at night here and all I do is watch the WTS light and when it goes out I turn the key. Starts right up.
I admit that I do like to plug it in a night so it doesn't take very long to get heat in the morning. Trouble is I forget!
Jim, I use a timer, just plug it in when you get home. Just don’t forget to unplug it. I drape the cord over the mirror....

Better to forget to plug it in than forget to unplug it before you leave.
All my plugs were bad. I set a timer that went to a lamp and to the trucks heater. I could look out a window to know when , for certain, the heater was on by the lamp being lit.
19* yesterday AM and tried something different...left the glow plugs cycle once for the full two minutes. Then when they kicked off I recycled the key to reactivate them and started it, took about 2 seconds to start and blew minimum smoke. By the time the glow plugs cycled off again things were warm enough to not fog out the whole yard.
55* here at 8:30pm placentia. This is the l99 thats been sitn for 2hrs and has a switch to activate gp's. So i flip switch and do sonething for a minute or 2
The 02 has a gpr-led that i let cycle everytime, no matter what temp is. Light comes on, i wait
If that is Placentia Ca then it is very rare it gets cold enough to wait until the WTS light goes off. Even here in north Tx it is really rare that I need to wait
until the light turnes off. I start it and wait for 15-sec and start driving. Takes a few mins to get out of the neighborhood at 30mph and then the rest is
55-60 to warm up all the way. Only times I wait longer than 30-sec to start is when it is in the teens and not plugged in. If it starts then the plugs are
on long enough.
Replaced all 8 GP's, both harnesses and both gaskets a couple months ago after 3 GP's tested bad and I was doing some other work on the engine.
The other morning it was 29 degrees. I decided to test the GP's as it doesn't get much colder here in north GA. I gave the truck 40 seconds (timed on stop watch) to warm the GP's and cylinders up before turning the key to start. The truck started in about 1.5 seconds. I was counting as the truck was cranking and didn't make it to 2 Mississippi. No loping, no lugging or anything out of the ordinary except for a few seconds of minimal white smoke. I was expecting the smoke though due to the temperature of the engine and fuel.

i hear ya but whats a half a minute more to allow complete cycle, let alone the starter then, getn full juice vs sharing with gp's.
Heres resting for 11hrs
will update w/gp energized
I believe it was designed to start even with the GPs working, if it wont crank then you have another issue. Try it just after the light shuts off and I bet it will start
right up. That is why you have two batteries. When I had a battery die mine would start with the WTS still lit up with just one battery connected, didn't crank as fast
but it started just fine
These are not some very delicate item that needs to be treated with kid gloves or they will fail.
I'll chime in.
It's been in the 30s at night a lot this year. That's not near as cold as some of you guys have to face. I usually park where it can be plugged in but not always. Normally I wait on the glow plugs for about 20 seconds before hitting the starter and she starts up quickly every time.
When I delivered rental equipment the diesel units had a notice to "wait 30 seconds before starting the engine after the key was turned on". I figure this is good for me too. If it was really cold I'd wait 30 seconds instead of 20. After she has ran and is warmed up I don't wait on the GP to restart her.

Glow plugs heat up red hot pretty darn fast.
According to Beru's website up to 1300* in 3 seconds.
I see 12.6v resting from the dash plug-in and it dips hard down to 10.8-11.1v with the glow plugs on and when I hit the starter it dips as low as 9.8v for a slit second. Then comes back up to 14.4-14.5 after the plugs shut off and the dash brightens. If the IAT comes on with the high idle it will dim the dash lights real quick again and drop to 13.5v or so while it is on.
Looking at that USB charger got me to thinking of something I recently learned...I always noticed that those things all only put out what I think are low amps and I could never find one that put out more amps. Then I recently learned that Li batteries explode and catch fire when they are charged too rapidly. Now I get it.
O.T..but pertaining to them LiPo batteries, we race them rc cars(electric and gas that has a little batt pack) and afterwards, store thembin an ammo box..seen 1 catch fire at a race and it just incinerates plus, you cant put it out.
