I sometimes put alot of weight on the tailgate of my 2001 F250. Has anyone experienced a failure to the cables? I was thinking of replacing them with chains for added strength. Any thoughts?

I think the "on paper" guide has some sort of insanely low weight rating -- 100 lbs or so, if I'm not mistaken. I've had 500+ lbs on it (two big guys, one of which was me). I can't remember if we ever had 3 people sit on the tailgate...
Just how much weight are you putting on it anyway?
Most of the time it's big logs for firewood, but like you said, sometimes it's big guys sitting on it as well. I was concerned about unseen corrosion in the connector.
i've had alot of weight on mine.... in excess of 500lbs. the problem is, that after time, the plastic casing cracks, and the cable starts rotting from the inside out. i had one fail on my older F-350 (pre SD) and it seems like they are the same design. after inspecting the failed one, i could see that because of the cracked casing, tha cable was completely rusted through.
