Also in cold areas use synthetic oil, makes cold starts easier. A few times here I've seen new owners put in fresh dino oil and immediately have problems.
Does the ICP change? It should start low and gradually build up as it tries to start. If it's showing one value all the time then the ICP sensor or the wiring to it is bad. In that case the PCM uses a default value so the truck will run, maybe that is what you're reading. OE only on engine sensors, btw.
Melted wires at the UVCH connector says inspect the connection inside the VCs closely. It can pull apart which causes arcing and melting. Fix for that is 50 cent mod, or new UVCH which has an improved design over the original factory ones. Or the Dorman one piece design; people don't complain about them like they did 5 years ago so I guess they are decent parts now.

2 weeks ago while installing my SXE turbo and Carson T4 kit I tested my GP's through the harnesses. 3 out of 8 tested bad, and I had told myself that if more than 2 out of 8 tested bad I would replace them all. I took the valve covers off and the passenger side had the original UVCH with 255,000 miles on it. The driver side had the Dorman UVCH which had been installed by the previous owner more than 5 years ago when I bought the truck. I was not expecting the Dorman, but it was there. Upon removing the OEM and Dorman UVCH's, I compared them closely. It was clear that the Dorman was of a cheaper quality. Everything from the wire coating to the way the wires secure themselves to the gaskets.
I realize that this Dorman UVCH could have been installed anywhere along between 2000 and 2014. That said, I bought new OEM UVCH's and gaskets because I did not want to get under the valve covers again for a long time. Again, there was a clear difference between the new OEM and old Dorman UVCH. I ended up installing a quarter in each clip and called it good.
Well we got it for a reasonable price because it was someone else’s problem. Had already just had new valve cover harness someone installed all new injector selonoids on it and glow plugs but in all truth the problem is that it just is due for injectors and harness pigtails which it will be getting both and fresh fluids threw out. Where gonna drive it some make sure everything else is good and put it up for sale.
Well I’ve been driving truck for about two weeks seems to run fine just starts and runs little ruff till it warms up which I’m sure is due to injectors. Anyway got time to get half the injectors changed on driver side this evening. And wow truck runs so much smoother hopefully it starts better in the morning. Hopefully will get other 4 in this week I’ll keep you guys updated on how it starts in morning.
I'm needing to do injectors on my Excursion here soon... it's been real grumpy/smokes on "cold" starts. Not even that cold really, just when the engine isn't warmed up at all. I just replaced the IPR and fixed some fuel leaks the fun way, by deleting the fuel bowl with the Sinister regulated return kit, and now that it has good oil and fuel pressure to the injectors I can really tell just how tired they are. I replaced glow plugs and UVCHs too so I know the glow plug system is performing, and it starts up pretty quickly, it just stumbles a couple seconds after starting and runs rough and smokes for a bit until it starts warming up. I can hear one, maybe two injectors that are a bit louder now with good oil and fuel. (Sound worn out, overall the injectors are quieter with the regulated return).
I know it’s been a bit guys but finally getting this truck almost finished up to put up for sale. I’ve replaced all 8 injectors with rebuilt injectors and bought a much nicer used front bumper and fixed fog lights. Just got done changing rear diff fluid and tcase fluid and getting another fresh oil change before it goes up for sale. Finished painting the new hood for it tonight since the current one on it is peeling bad. Also truck starts and runs great now way better than when we bought it.
