Manual 4x4

Manual 4x4
6.4 thread was prob the wrong place for this so I put it in here
Bit of a stupid question, and first post here, but I have a 6.4 2008 F-250 Lariat with a manual 4x4 shifter (2H-4H-N-4L) and I want to make sure what I think is correct.
From what I understand,
-To shift between the 4x4 modes I simply put the truck in neutral and use the 4x4 stick to shift to the desired mode.
-I do not have to use the hub locks to shift between 4x4 gear ratios.
I am also wondering,
-do the Hub locks affect the differential
-are the differentials always free or limited slip or whatever else
Sorry for the beginner level questions, not used to the manual 4x4 thing

To shift between 2wd and 4x4 hi you don’t need to be in neutral but you do need to lock the hubs. Trucks that came with the manual 4x4 lever came with manual hubs only not the vaccum operated hubs, you need to lock the hubs to engage the front axle. If you don’t the front axle will not put power to the ground. To shift into and out of 4x4 low you need to be in neutral, stopped with your foot on the brake. If you want to put it in neutral to shift into 4x4 high your not going to hurt anything that’s actually what I do myself. I get out and lock the hubs as I converted to manual warns and stop at neutral on my way back to drive and selcect 4x4 wait for the transfer case to shift as I have the electronic **** then shift to drive. The fornt end in all super duties is an open differential the rear can be limited slip if it is your sticker on the driver door jamb under axle will be a letter and a number. If it’s open it will be two numbers under the axle section of the sticker.

The rear could also have a factory installed electronic locker, a switch would be located on the dash.
My 2012 F 350 4x4 auto transmission, manual 4wd has the lever or shifter on the floor to engage 4wd. There is a round switch, looks just like the cover to the electric outlet, on the dash that engages the electric locker for the real axle.

Thanks !
I was tired when I posted that and actually thought that maybe I should research it and make sure it was available for his year truck, but I realized that there are a lot smarter people than me on here and someone would know that and if i was wrong would post up.
Thanks for correcting my incorrect information.

Farmers also use this in hayfields with heavy loads & your not out on the road to keep trans cool.
Ive used this method for 35yrs W/O any issues.

Not True. LOTS of ppl use 4low with Hubs UNLOCKED to move heavy trailers or campers into tight spots and / or on steep hills to keep trans cool : plus u don’t have all the hunching in 4wd when turning deep.

With an older, twin stick style transfer case, it was possible to engage 2 Lo for a super low gear. Doing so on a newer truck will cause damage.

Nothing will be damaged, it's just in there to cover Ford. You can move the shifter in and out of 4lo just fine with the hubs unlocked. After all the point of the hubs is just to lock the outer stub shafts to the inner axles. The transcase doesn't care if the hubs are unlocked.
