You could use barb fittings, but sump is probably your best bet. New aftermarket fuel senders actually make the pickup connection SMALLER.

So why do you think you need 1/2" pick up?
Is the rest of the fuel line also 1/2"?
Is the stock pick up / line 5/16"?
What ever you are doing have you tried the 3/8" pick up & full fuel line to carb yet?

If running 1/4 mile what do you have for the rest of the fuel system from tank (where is it) to the type / size of carb.

Well 3/8" fuel line supports 750HP with a regulated return line. So why do you want 1/2"?

Wanting to start with getting rid of the puny 5/16 coming out of the tank, motor will be right at 500hp, going to run a mechanical pump and being they suck from the tank to pump it needs to be larger

3/8” is plenty big for that with gas.

You can have a 1000hp motor but if you are only driving it on the street then the 5/16" line will work.
BTW have you checked the inlet / outlet of the pump? I have not known any mechanical pumps to have 1/2" ports. You will have to run adaptors to get it back down to if lucky 3/8"

I should take back the 1/2" pump because I found one, well 2 one for 550hp and 1000hp but for small block 351C/400 motors made in the USA for $200
They also make sender in 1/2" but none for trucks.

BTW they say 3/8" is fine for 550hp

yep I say the same and may be limited to that if using a so called HP pump that bolts to the motor unless from the abovelink.

The pump is a Holley 110gph mech-it only has 3/8 inlet-outlets, i'm just trying to avoid running an electric for noise and simplicity. Just wanted to go big on lines for any future upgrades, I know 3/8 will work for now though-just do it once kinda thing. Most concerned with the 5/16 out of the stock pickup
