I will be buying a 2005 Ranger XLT FX4 Level II this week.
I do not have the owners manual yet.
My understanding is that it has a Torsen Differential.
I have done some searching as to IF it needs the friction modifier or not.
My understanding after watching a video by Torsen is that it DOES NOT use clutches in its differentials.
Anyone have experience with this? Thanks!
The Torsen is all gear driven so no friction modifier is needed, and non synthetic fluid is recommended.
Sorry, that might sound logical, but my Ford factory shop manual calls out to add the friction modifier (XL-3) to SYNTHETIC 75W-140 gear oil for the Torsen diff.!

Do you have a TSB # you can post to support this info, as it conflicts with the Owner Manual FX4 Level-2 differential lubricant specifications listed on pages 235-to the top of page 238, that has the sub (note-1) definition, which calls out the XL-3 friction modifier, to be added to the Synthetic 75W-140, part # XY-75W-140-QL(1), meeting Specification WSL-MEC-A.
We have to scroll down to the top of page 238 to find the sub note-1 definition. Looks like they have displaced it's location in the info stack, so is kinda confusing to find & interpret.
Anyway the FX4 Level-2 differential has a higher torque operating range, so gets a higher viscosity fluid specified. The XL-3 directions via sub note-1 definition (scroll down to read atop page 238) still calls out the addition of 4oz of the XL-3 friction modifier, to 5.25-5.5 pints of the synthetic 75W140 FX-4 Level-2 rear axle lube.
Well guys, I've got the truck! Haven't checked the manual yet for the Torsen Differential lube specs......I'm going to change and or flush all the fluids in it here soon.....Thanks for the info!
Ok, probably a good idea to change all the fluids if you don't know where it is on all past & present due scheduled maintenance.
Use the specified fluids that say in writing that they are licensed to meet or exceed Fords specifications & do that at least as soon as specified, or sooner if your drive cycle or operation conditions/environment meet Fords description for "Severe Service" & if so, follow the severe service call out for scheduled maintenance.
