The turn signal arm on my 86 F-250 stopped going into hold on - auto off after turn mode when trying to signal a right turn. Left turn still works normally. I can still signal right turn but have to hold it in position and it stops signaling as soon as I let go of the arm. Should also mention that I have the tilt steering option where the steering wheel angle can be changed by depressing the signal arm in the direction parallel with the steering column. Perhaps the turn signal issue is related to the tilt function?
If anyone has experience with trouble shooting the turn signal arm not going in to the hold mode and then auto release upon completion of the turn please let me know how you solved it. I haven't tried anything yet. Started doing it yesterday.
It does seems the problem is with the switch or the cam. Replacement is probably needed. Thanks for the link to the youtube vid.
I did some research on replacement parts and the reviews on the replacement parts are pretty dismal, including the Dorman part referenced in the video.
Can anyone recommend decent replacement parts for the turn signal switch or cam?
I had the same 'hold it on one way' issue a few years ago with an '88 F150. Initially I tried the cam replacement approach, but it wasn't successful.........so I replaced the whole unit through RockAuto.
The complication with a tilt column, is that it's necessary to remove the curved plug from the switch loom, thread the loom through the tilt mechanism, then re-attach the plug. There is a red wedge in the plug that comes out, releasing the bunch of wires attached; I would take a pic or draw a sketch of the wire positions.
With the non-tilt column, removing the plug isn't necessary.
Rock Auto shows three brands, one economy and two standard. Do you remember which one you used? Any advice on which one? I will choose one of the standard replacement switches. The most expensive one (Airtex) may use better solder and contact materials. Wondering which one to get. Definitely not getting the economy one. The reviews on that same model switch on Amazon are pretty dismal, "cheaply made" and even the "wire harness being short". No excuse for that! Looks like both the SMP and Airtex switches have a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty.
Here's a post from Bill he made ~8 years ago; you might still be able to buy one at your local dealer, or Green Sales Company (1-800-543-4959) has 4 (I have no idea if those sponsors/sources he lists in that post are even still in business, I think Ed had a stroke and later died).
