Hello. I'm new here. I have 2001 CC SB F-250 7.3 218k auto trans. It has 4" turbo back straight pipe, 6637 filter, edge evolutiontuner. Since I put in the 6637 air filter it seems that I get turbo stall/ a fluttering noise, basically like it's trying to get more air and can't. A friend of mine has the same pickup and air filter, only a 6spd and no tuner. He doesn't have this issue. Any help? Reply
I'm posting mostly to follow because I'm still new at this, but based on what I've read on the fluttering is that would be compressor surge from the turbo...I get it some on my truck (has 6637...not chipped) when I'm pulling my trailer under heavier acceleration or up a grade...
I'd say you're probably experiencing it more than your friend because you are chipped and probably running higher than stock boost levels already.
Joshua Dishong have you heard of a fix? I'm wondering if installing a wicked wheel would help..
any of the upgraded compressor wheels should help reduce surge...assuming I'm right and that is the cause of the sound you described...hopefully some others will chime in as there's a whole lot of collective wisdom on here
Does it occur when the trans shifts? What happens is that the turbo is spinning fast at high RPM's and when the trans upshifts RPM's drop and the turbo is still spinning fast and the air has no place to go. Chipped trucks will do it, I don't think that non-chipped trucks do and I don't know if having a manual makes any difference or not.
No not when it shifts. Only when i'm in high gear. There is a YouTube video that shows the sounds perfectly and if you watch it play attention to the dash, it shows the same rpms n speed mine happens at. I don't know if I can share the video to here but if you type in 7.3 powerstroke compressor surge and look for the video posted by "cjloskot".
Does not "have" to be chipped to do it, my ZF6 shifts under a heavy load and 6637 would do it to a much lesser extent, then when i went chipped it was very obvious. A billet wheel was the "easiest" fix for me, no more turbo noise when shifting. Do it right if you go this route, no impact gun wheel installs

This is basically my same experience...Usually happens right leading up to the 3-4 shift (auto) when I’m pulling my camper and pushing about 16-17# I get a little flutter right before the shift and then the blow off sounds a lot like the video the OP mentioned. Sometimes I’ll get it on earlier shifts if I’m pulling a grade.
No need for the expensive wheel. Throw a 60.00 ww1 in it and call it the day...i HAD the surge and got both ww1 in each truck. Also get the Darth Vader breathing sound when she changes gears
Hows the fires where ur at?
The best fix is a ported compressor housing but that'll set you back around $4 bills. If I were in your shoes, I would go for a WW1.
