Cig lighter shut off mod - ideas needed for 2015 Explorer
Hi all, the cig lighter is always on even after the ignition is off. I'm trying to piggy back the wire (fuse #20) to a switched fuse in the engine compartment fuse box. However, it seems all fuse positions in that fuse box are always on. I can't really find a position that is switched off when the ignition is off. From the owner's manual it also looks like there is no additional fuse for cig lighter in the fuse box under the wheel. Did I miss anything here? Is there any switched fuse in the engine compartment? Thanks.

I'm looking at the 2014 diagrams and *assuming* that the '15 is the same. Give me a heads-up if not.
There are several fuses under the hood that are HOT in START/RUN. They're all CRITICAL for engine operation and tapping into one of those for a plug-in accessory is ill advised. You don't want a defective power plug to disable the engine.
A much better option would be to wire in a relay that's controlled by the ACCESSORY DELAY circuit. That way, it would power down with the rest of your accessories when the key is OFF and a door gets opened. BCM fuses F32, F38, F48 are all valid sources of the output of that relay.

Thanks. Right I don't think it's good idea to tap into those fuses under the hood. In the end I think I had a pretty lame solution. The goal is to make the GPS turn off when the car is off so I added a relay into the GPS power adapter which is inserted into the cig lighter. I noticed the USB port is off when the car is off. So I connect the relay to the USB port to drew 5V power. It's ugly but it works.
