Manual recommends premium 92 octane for towing, use in hot climates, and or for max performance. I have only run 92 octane since new because usually when I am using the truck, I am towing. Truck will work fine with 87 octane but don't think the average person can tell the difference. I buy my guess from the same local station most of the time. When on the road, I prefer well known brands.....Chevron/Texaco, Mobile, Shell, BP, etc. Only brand I absolutely will NOT use is any gas sold by AM/PM mini mart.
Have yet to run anything higher than 87.. my older trucks it seemed to make no difference, but they were all the 5.4.. Maybe when I make my Thanksgiving run to Virginia I'll load it up with Premium and see if it makes any mileage difference.. I doubt it will though. Or at least not enough to make up for the extra $$.
I understand the Subject of Gasoline is an ongoing issue ....
.Around Here we are seeing premium approaching $ 4.00 a gallon on Tier 1 Brands ( This Morning $ 3.89 Sunoco Premium)
We also have problems with some gas stations having older in ground tanks or out dated pumps.. so many times its not the quality of the delivered fuel but the fuel coming from the stations themselves.
With the marginal stations there can be water issues/leakage, ,I recently had to have one of my vehicles towed after a fillup @ BP due to a defective storage tank.
As a result .. I tend to purchase only at newer tier 1 fuel locations.. I stay away from the BP's Turkey Hill.Get Go stations period
I avoid E10 when possible. Cost is usually prohibitive but 100% gas burns much cleaner and has more BTUs.
I agree.. last time I looked there was only one station that had pure gasoline around here...it is a Boat Marina... and the price is such that you have to mortgage your house to fill up..
We are going to switch over to "winter" gas soon...you will see a hard drop in MPG/Performance as well
I'm at 7400 ft and have only run two tanks of 85 so far (only ~800 miles on the truck). Just put 87 in last night because of the information shared here. I think it takes some time for the computer to learn and make any difference. So I'll stay at that grade for now. It was $.30/gal more than the 85 octane.
I've only run 87 in mine even when towing. I've never had the engine knock but then I'm at sea level to 5000'. All my fuel comes from card lock stations so I have no idea on the brand or if it's branded.

Id love to see back to back dyno results with each to see what the gains are. If there wasn't a difference I don't think Ford would put it in their book. Its not like Fords gaining anthing from us running either level fuel...
