Hello-
I hate to ask but can someone help me determine which transmission I have?
2005 F250 super duty 5.4L gasoline V8
I didn't have any luck with any VIN decoding and sadly the body shop that repaired my front door
must have removed the vehicle ID sticker
also if you happen to know any of the drive train info that might be pertinent to changing fluids in the
differentials.
Thanks for the reply Sam I am. I was wondering if (based on the 5.4l) it was the 5r110 or the 4r70w(4 speed automatic). I'm not convinced I have the torqshift that seems integral to the 5r110. Is there some way to get under the vehicle and make that distinction? Fwiw I have an overdrive switch.
Do you have an overdrive switch or a tow/haul switch? In 2005 the Superduty trucks all had tow/haul, not OD OFF. Also, the 4R70W was never available in any Superduty. If it's a 2005 automatic Superduty the only transmission it could be is the 5R110W. That transmission requires MERCON SP fluid.
Thanks Mark. I'm looking to do a fluid change on the transmission. No one in my area is setup to do the hot flush. From what I have gathered(here and further investigation into my service/purchase records and owners manual) I have the 5r110w torqshift 5 speed automatic transmission and 5.4L v8 engine in a 2005 F250 4x2 SD supercab. Im wondering if the 08 pan/filter upgrade that some folks are doing on this forum will work/is useful on my vehicle configuration. I seem to recall reading somewhere that you thought this upgrade would be useful but it might have been specific to a 6.0L. I think it was in conjunction with a nod of approval for adding a transmission temp sensor/gauge as well? I have a factory in dash gauge but have heard they are limited in their accuracy.
here is what I am thinking of doing...
1-drain pan
2-remove and replace pan and internal filter with 08 'upgrade' pan/filter(if applicable)
2a-replace external filter
3-replace fluid removed with same amount of mercon SP
4-add fluid as/if needed to top off to proper levels
5-drive some amount(100 miles?)
6-repeat 1,3,4
alternatively to this DIY full flush(including pan/filter upgrade if applicable)
Yes, Frank's method will work for your transmission and I recommend it. The 2008+ pan and filter are a good upgrade. The pan and filter are the same for all 5R110W, not just the 6.0L.
