E40D PCMs all the same?

Title says it all, but do the e40d pcms exchange?

Does an F150 swap with an F250/350?
Does a gas exchange with a diesel?
Does a 4x4 exchange with a 4x2?

I know the 95-97 are different than the 89-94 because of the diode missing in the solenoid. I would assume the 4x4 to 4x2 doesn't matter, but I'm not sure on the gas to diesel.

Just ask because I am getting an e40d 4x4 from a 97 PS to go into my 4x2 90 IDI and it won't come with the ECU and I would rather upgrade to the newer ECU from the junkyard than use my old solenoid pack.

Thanks!

You'll need to use one of the 89-94 specific IDI diesel TECA's.Preferably,if your looking to upgrade, you'll get one of the part numbers posted here.
"Super Duty" here implies the "F450" and they shift for their very low gearing and wont work in a pickup so don't get one of those.
The gas and psd units are not just for the E4OD trans like in the IDI diesel trucks. In those trucks, they are used to control their engines too.

You'll use your 89-94 solenoid pack from your old trans.Inspect the pins,so long as they are bright and clean it should be good.If you suspect it's a problem, you can test it with an ohm meter. If you need the chart I'll post it.
You'll also need to use a 4 stud diesel converter. The one that will come in the PSD trans will be a 6 stud. You can get decent remans on ebay.

If your going to use a 4wd trans in a 2wd truck, you'll want to grab a transfer case and install that.Even if you don't ever add a d50 or d60 and front drive shaft, you'll have a set of low gears to use. You'll also need the shorter rear driveshaft.

Ok, so you are saying it is IMPOSSIBLE to use the 97 solenoid pack and a 97 E40D PCM?

Yep, I'll have a TC in there, no worries, doing the 2008 D60 swap.

**Ignoring the fact that I'll have to swap the connector to the new style for the solenoid pack.

Maybe the wiring on the trans controller (What I am calling at PCM and I think what you called the TECA?) for the 97 is different and that is why it wont work?

Impossible? No.Anything is possible. Proper and wise however? No lol. Here is why:

PCM/TECA same basic thing yeah. It's just called the TECA (Transmission Electronic Control Assembly) because it only controls the trans in the IDI trucks, where the engine is just mechanical.
PCM (Powertrain Control Module) for gas and the power stroke trucks where it controls the engine and trans (the powertrain.)

Ahhhh, ok, I thought the PS trucks would have a similar TECA that I could swap with mine.

I'll have to do a little research on the PCM, but this is good to know what I will basically be swapping the solenoid pack.

ALSO, since I put a turbo on my IDI, could I use the turbo TECA part number or the non-turbo one?

Thanks for all of the help!

Go with the one for the turbo if you want.I have one of each for my F450 and I can't tell the difference in shift schedule so either will work.I have the turbo spec in there now.
In my F250 I added a turbo years ago and kept the n/a TECA.If I had a trubo pickup TECA to swap in there,I might be able to notice the difference with the higher pickup gearing. If I swapped a turbo spec in there,I might claim; oh yeah go with the turbo spec cus it downshifts and unlocks the converter during a downshift sooner to help keep boost up and keep you in the powerband better..Or it might be like the F450 and I couldn't tell the difference either.I have a feeling though if I ever did put one in,I would probably feel the difference and like it better but just don't know for sure.I hate spending a hundred bucks not knowing if it would gain me anything or not,so I never swapped.I would go with the turbo though if your looking to upgrade to the '94 unit anyway.

Ok, riddle me this: could I be super crazy and just add the correct diodes to the solenoid pack? In the picture it looks like the circuit board still has the populated holes for them. Obviously figuring out which diodes to use would be the bigger question - but it does look possible.

**I know, if I am going to break the whole thing down, I might as well swap the diodes too. Just thinking out loud.

Ok, hopefully last question.

The solenoid packs are the same from 89-94 no matter what vehicle they come out of right? F150-FX50. There isn't anything special for the diesel, right?

Everything I have read, tells me the internals are for the most part the same, just wanted to check the electronics are too.

**Just thinking if I goto picknpull and grab a solenoid pack so I don't rip my trans apart before knowing if this new-to-me one even works.

Yeah they are all the same.Gas or diesel.F150-F450.'89-'94.There's technically and older and an updated type in this year range but since the old style wasn't failure prone, don't worry about it.Anything you find, including your old one has a 99.9% chance of being good.
