my shift collar broke where the shifter goes into the collar. I was wondering how difficult it is to replace it and if I should replace the shifter shaft too since where was already a lot of play and it was a little difficult getting it into gear.
Any my advice on changing it. What’s all involved?
We just rebuilt the steering column on our 1965 Flare side. The Ford shop manual and the aftermarket manuals have NO information about how to rebuild the column with a three speed shifter.
It is not too complicated. There are a couple you tube videos that will help give you an idea.
I think I would remove the steering column from the truck and do a complete rebuild upper and lower ends on the bench.
The aftermarket catalogs like LMC and others have most of the needed parts.. Use their exploded view illustrations as the best reference.
To change the shift collar requires a couple steps. Remover the steering wheel and the turn signal switch assembly under that. It will require that you unplug and then remove the wire pins from the two harness plugs and pull the wires out of the steering column. Carefully mark the pin locations so they can go back the same. There are two short bolts with square heads that hold the upper collar onto the steering column. Remove the two bolts and be careful to not lose them. They go back on loose and hook into slots on the underside of the steering column collar. They are tricky to put back after you replace the shifter collar but you will get the hang of it. The broken shift collar will then slide off the column. If you are in that far, you should keep going, pull the shift tube and the lower shifter levers and wear plates. Clean, inspect and re grease.
The column does not need to be removed to replace the shift collar. Once you remove the switch, you have to remove the upper flange to access the collar.

no I know I don’t gave to change the column but I might as well since I’ll have it apart. There was a lot of play and getting it to engage gears took a lot and now it won’t. So might as well replace it then look at the links to the tranny to make sure everything’s good. Trying to get it all done right the first time kinda deal
