Steering column/sector removal

On a 57 F100 with column shift what is the best way to go about pulling the column/sector? Do I pull the steeing wheel and take the shifter handle and tube off the column and drop it all out the bottom or will the column jacket seperate from the sector and let the sector and shaft go out the bottom and the column stay with the cab?
Thanks Richard

I guess you could try to pull just the shaft and leave the column in place, but it won't save you much time or effort. Either you need a bunch of room under the truck or you need to remove the floor plates and disconnect the column support to allow it to angle.

I have plenty of room underneath. The front clip is off and the engine is out. I am getting ready to pull the cab.
Their is not room for the sector to come up through the floor/firewall and the shift lever won't go down through either.
Is it simple to pull the shift lever and shift tube off the column. That would let it go out the bottom as a unit or will the sector and steering shaft drop down out of the housing leaving the outer column housing with the cab.
Just looking for the simplest way to do thiswith the least disassembly.

Thankd Richard

It is simple to take the shifter tube off; read thru this: http://www.flatheadv8.org/columnshift.pdf .. but it isn't necessary. Taking the shift lever off is a 15 second job and is explained on the same site. You just press in two spring-loaded pins that the lever pivots on and pull it out (read the cautions!!) To get the assembly out, you do need to have the plates at the floorboard off.

I'm not clear what you are calling the "sector"; do you mean the gearbox itself? At any rate the assembly needs to go down and out, after you've gotten the arm off the gearbox.

Yes I see it now, Thanks. Just didn't look close last night. The shift lever has a roll pin on this one but will come right off.
Yes sector=gear box.
Any way I got the cab off with the column and gearbox still in the cab.
I'll get in there now and pull the column. Should be easy as the cab is still on the hoist. Steering wheel, shift lever and floor plate and it should drop right out.

Thanks again Richard
