Checking and Calibrating Torque Wrenches.
When I started managing the facility in the mid 80’s there were a few torque wrenches, but the guys I inherited all had calibrated hands. As I was just getting my feet wet we were working on a critical project trying to get tests done on a Tempo, heading into a weekend of OT. The guy building up the vehicle stripped out the threads where the slide pins thread into little ears on the front knuckle. Not so calibrated hands. Downs Ford couldn’t get a replacement knuckle until Tuesday. I had to call a sales-engineer in Troy to go over to Ford Engineering to get a knuckle and overnight it for Saturday delivery. Not a fun phone call. We quickly went to the click wrenches as with brake brackets and caliper pins you would not always have clear sight of the readout. As I revamped procedures, everything was tightened to spec per the manual, all fasteners replaced per the manual.
I’ve got a few other stories about torque matters in brake testing, but for another thread.
Those beam wrenches in the video are ones I bought as a teenager, so they are about 50 years old. Same problem with them, you don’t always get a good visual on the dial.
