I have a 2011 5.0 with 72000 miles on it. I have a knocking that I believe is an exhaust problem but while I tear into I figured that pulling/replacing the plugs may be a good idea also. Is it alright to soak the plugs with PB Blaster before trying to pull them? I understand that they may be stubborn to unfasten. How to I test the coil wires to determine their performance? I have never worked on this kind of system. thanks
PB Blaster isnt necassary on these. The 5.0 engine in the generation is some of the easiest plugs Ive ever changed. Take extra care when releasing the red lock tabs on the coil packs, they are kind of brittle. Other than that, if youve ever changed plugs before these will be a breeze for you.
Also the coil packs can rattle tight to the little holder piece. If you just try to disconnect the wires it is a PAIN. To make it easier, push the COP and the wire attachment together to release that tension and then pull them apart.
Well I still haven't done this but am threatening to do it soon cause that exhaust noise is pissing me off. Is there a special socket utilized for getting to the plugs? They appear to be deep in the hole..
You need a 5/8 spark plug socket with an extension. I used electrical tape to ensure the socket was secured to the extension. Also mine were on quite tight so I used a pipe around the ratchet to get be a little more torque but ease into it, you don't want to bust it. It is very simple. Coil bolt is an 8mil.
