Coils DO NOT "slowly fail". Most coils fail due to some other fault such as bad plugs or shorted boots. Coils can be tested for proper operation. Replacing coils "on general principle" or due to age is a WASTE OF MONEY.
Do a proper tune-up including plugs, filters, pcv , check all vacuum lines, wiring connections (especially grounds), etc. Then, if you still have a problem, you can test the coils and replace any that may be bad.
You cannot replace a factory coil with "a better one" or one that will give improved performance.
I would not use NGK plugs. You cannot put a "better" plug into your Triton engine than the correct Motorcraft plug. The correct Autolite plugs are also good. I would not recommend anything else. Especially NOT NGK.
