Trying to assemble the automatic shift lever arm and the components aren't fitting as I would expect.
It has been too long since I took these parts out, and I didn't take photos at the time. Idiot me. The shift collar in the picture is the one I took out with these components fit in. They fit the same as the new collar.
Does the 7A347 retainer fit -over- the top of the 7293 spring? I expected that it would, but it doesn't.
As assembled with the 354590-S washer under the 7A347 retainer, the top of the 7361 plunger is near the top of the opening where the shift lever goes. I expected it to be lower.
I can't believe that this is where these parts end up. Seems too high.
One end of the 7293 spring the OD was ground down. I thought that this would fit inside the 7A347 retainer, but it doesn't. And with the 354590-S washer between them, they don't nest.
If you look down from the top into the hole where all of those parts drop down into inside of the collar - there should be 2 tiny screw holes toward the inner edge of the hole. You will have to compress the springs and everything down to the level of the screw holes and then install the screws to keep it in place. One of those impossible jobs. I try to never take those screws out.
This is 1966, but should be very similar to yours.
Here's the parts in exploded view.
Here's how they nest together.
Here's what it should look like when everything is dropped into the hole WITHOUT the retainer on top. (2 springs, washer and plunger)
And then I drop the retainer on top.
Here's the side view with everything waiting to be compressed.
Then the trick is to compress everything to where the retainer is flush with the top of the hole and the 2 screws capture the edge of the retainer.
If I were you I'd start by dropping only the bigger spring in first and make sure it goes all the way down into the hole and sits flush on the bottom. Should look like this I would expect. About 1/8" below the top edge of the hole.
Side view with just bigger spring installed.
If it doesn't seat all the way down then maybe there is a burr in the hole or the spring is a little tweaked. Maybe the hole in the new collar is not as deep as the old one. Just guesses.

Parts catalog states:
01678 = Steering Column Opening Cover Plate Gasket .. Not Serviced, improvise from 3/4" fiberglass batt.
01738 = Steering Column Opening Cover Plate Seal .. Not Serviced, improvise from inner tube stock.
Well, the shift collar I purchased (aftermarket Taiwan) does not have the two holes in the original location. The two bare holes to the right side should work, but I'll need to drill deeper and thread them first.
Those two screws are not in the exploded view at all. Now it makes sense. Thanks TA455HO for showing me how all those go together and for pointing out the missing screws!
The screws that hold the shift indicator on are self tapping, so I used them to tap the two holes in the shift collar.
All is assembled and things look good. Need to buy a battery Monday and fire it up!
Here's a clamp I made recently for removing and installing the pin in the shift lever.
Worked great for compressing the springs in the shift collar, though it would have been better if there was more clearance for the screwdriver.
The washer in the image was removed as it interfered with the screw installation.
