I have a 88 F350. With a 460 and zf5. The other day I had to take it in to get the starter replaced. I chose a gear reduction starter. A/C Delco so it's quality. Fast forward to yesterday and today, now the truck dies somewhat randomly and when it does, It won't restart for a few minutes. The kicker is, when you turn the key to run, the check engine light will NOT come on. When it does show, the truck will start. Any ideas anyone? Thanks!
No new codes, selector valve and fuel tank and both pumps were replaced. I am wondering if they ECM may be going bad. If they Check engine light does not show at KOEO, the ecm is probably not getting power or is dying. Did a system reset and unplugged ecm and plugged back in for a 100% good connection. As for used parts, just an IAC and TPS.
I'm not sure about '88, if the CEL comes on and runs, thats good.
The fact that you mention it doesn't run when the CEL doesn't come on when you turn the key, indicates there is a problem with either the TFI module on the distributor or directly with the ECM.
I would be inclined to check the wiring between the ECM and the harness. And if I was that far, I would pull and inspect the ECM.
I'm thinking it may be possible that the battery connection isn't the best? Where does the ecm get its power? Starter solenoid? Could have jumbled it around when swapping starter wires.
