For those who have re-geared your trucks do you also have to reprogram the Ford computer of the change? Going from 3.73 to 4.30. I also assume a tuner would also have this ability?

I made the same regear as you did on our '09 F-250. I thought I would need to reprogram to compensate for the different gearing but the computer compensated on it's own. The speedometer is dead on and I didn't touch a thing following the new 4.30's being installed.

The trucks pick up the speed sensing off a "star wheel" attached to the carrier next to the ring gear. It does not change the number of revolutions when you change gear ratios. It still makes one revolution when the tires makes one revolution. You can change gear ratios without needing to change any computer settings.

When the speedometer was mechanical, the speedo picked up the number of driveshaft revolutions. You would need to change it mechanically if the speedo was purely mechanical or change the programming if the speedo was electrically operated and the setup used a VSS (Variable speed sensor).

The need to change the settings happens when the tire diameter change and not gear ratios.

i changed it in my 2006 when I went from 3.73 to 4.10. Its not as much about correcting the speedometer as it is the transmission shift points - though having them both correct is ideal.

When I swapped the dealer re-flashed for the gear change. As said by scanj0, it was for the trans shift points. I also have tunes from 5 Star and they can revise the tunes to do the same.
