My truck (7.3 idi ) started and died and now won't start. This is my first idi and am lost on some issues but learning.
I replaced the glow plugs and plug harness within the last few months. The relay seemed to not be an issue as it had no problems starting so this was not done. I need to know if the water in fuel light ( not bright like the wait to start light ) is on when starting and goes off after started as it has been since I bought it and assumed that it was how the system worked. I have another filter and will replace if needed, but also want information on the relay for heating the plugs, as it is getting cooler at night (32* ) now and haven't had issues starting until now. I had it plugged in last winter and no issues starting then. Any input will be appreciated. I may figure out how to post on this site one of these days.
will the truck start when plugged in for 2-3 hours?
what brand glow plugs did you put in it?
if anything other than motorcraft ZD-9 glow plugs, than they are probably burned out already.
i can't answe on hte water in fuel light, my 88 has not had the sensor hooked up since 1990.
how much fuel is in the tank?
these trucks are known for cracking the fuel pickup in the tank around the 1/4 tank mark.
it mat just be sucking air through a cracked pickup tube.
The WIF light will come on until the engine is started in the earlier pickups, mine is also not hooked up as i have aftermarket filters / heads. Is the engine cranking over normally? How long is the wait to start light staying on? Is there any smoke from the exhaust? Does it try to fire at all? No smoke, no fuel, white smoke means bad GPs or air intrusion. Loosen an injector line and crank the engine 10-15 seconds. Should leak enough fuel to cover the return cap and then some. If it tries to start with the injector cracked, its air intrusion. If it doesnt try to start, you have white smoke, and plenty of fuel at the injector, its GPs.
