The rear of the front tire looks awfully close to the back of the wheel well. Does it have the original front "axle"?

Yes that spacing is original

I dream of building something along these lines, would need to extend the cab & be a dually though, oh & 7.3 powerstroke running gear!

I agree.. could it be a spring shackle is stuck/frozen ?? or front springs installed backwards ?? just thinking out loud...

These trucks were built with the wheels towards the back of the opening. In fact, guys who build show trucks have to buy kits to relocate the axle so that they can make it look "correct". I simple left every stock on the front end.
