Oil level question

I have 02 F350 with oil leak in the valley not exactly sure where it is I’m still looking. I lose about a quart in 2 1/2-3 weeks but what I noticed is when the oil gets a little over halfway down the cross hatches on the dip stick then I can tell that it could use a quart or so.
The sound is not that loud just a little more rattle to the injectors. But it goes away as soon as I add oil there is no difference in power or anything else that I can tell.
Anyone else notice this in their motor and what would cause it?

It is the oil pressure that opens the injectors. Thicker oil takes a little longer to get to the areas needed. your new one qt of oil may thin the oil out more and open the injectors faster. I have had my 7.3 for over 15 years. The engine will have all kinds of 'noise changes', and then come full circle back. When was the last time that you changed out your fuel filter and air filter and oil?.Everything (filters/oil/fuel) will change out how the engine sounds and runs (but not much). If you get too low on oil (8-9 qts) the injectors will not open and the truck will not start.... or if going down the road and you loose oil (ie filter leak or seal at injector give way) the engine will slowly die.... had this happen to me two times in all the years that I have had my truck and I never really found out why I 'lost' so much oil in a short amount of time. (this will 'save' you from 'melting' down your engine and I think is a 'nice' feature.)

The 'injector rattle'... I do not think it is a concern. If you have the valve covers off, check the torque on the hold down injector bolts. But I do not think it is a big issue.

All filters are less than 3000 miles on them.
It took me a while to notice this change I fuel up weekly and check oil and add if when it needs it. I noticed the change back to slightly quieter one day and that started me thinking about it.
No one else notices it but me I can’t figure that one out my wife says I’m deaf as a stone.
Guess I’ll just keep eye on things and use my early warning system.
thanks

How long have you had your 7.3? Why I ask is to let you know that the 'engine' will go through (what seems to be) many...many 'noise' changes. Cold thick oil in the winter... hot thin oil in the summer... winter fuel...summer fuel....cold temp/hot temp, Load or no load on the turbo.... filters....etc.... (and many more) will effect how your engine sounds. The sound of your engine 'will seem' to 'change' day by day and hour by hour.... if you 'try' to pay to much attention to it, it could drive you crazy with the ever changing possibilities. Relax. Know also that it is 'normal', for a 7.3 to 'burn' about a qt 'around' every 1,000-1,500 miles (engines do very on the amount of 'burning' of oil)

Only been in my drive way about 6 months and I’m learning as I go. I try to do all my own work and so far I have up pipes, then new deleted pedestal for turbo, CAC boots. Brakes and a couple ujoints.
I know that it sounds a lot different with the fifth wheel hooked up and seem to run stronger when I have a load of firewood than running empty.

I would inspect the ends of the hi pressure oil lines. If those fittings are leaking I would proactively change them cause when one blows you are down. Call the tow truck .lol

Take a look on top of the engine and there are three areas/pockets in the valley: forward, middle, and rear. Generally speaking:

Forward - High Pressure Oil system (pump, lines, fittings, gasket), Injection Pressure Regulator (IPR), and Injection Control Pressure (ICP) sensor.

Middle - oil fittings/plugs

Rear - Turbo, pedestal, Exhaust Backpressure Valve

There can be mulitple issues but whatever the forward-most pocket is getting oil should give you an indication on where to look for the leak. You might want to clean up the oil as best you can then see where it starts to collect. You can also stuff some clean shop towels down there and let it idle for a bit and see where the spots are on the towel to help narrow it down too.

Do you have a HPX? If so, check those fittings on the head. Mine leaked frequently.

One more potential leak area is the hard oil line running along the passenger side head. There is a clamp about mid way back that is known to wear a hole in the line over time causing a pin hole (or larger) leak into the valley.

Going to get onto the oil leak soon I’m in camping mode at the present time trying to get two more short weekends in before the snow flies.
I have yet to get the old girl out on a long run yet but I see glimpses of wonderful things when pulling my 5er like how when it’s in OD at about 65-70 mph she seems to hit her stride for power.
I cannot wait to get her on a four lane with 70 mph limit. I used to pull this trailer with 04 F150 Max Payload with the 7bolt rims it done well but what a difference this truck is I rarely have to or want to go over 1/2 throttle to climb hills.
My buddy who is a diehard Chevy fan is going to blow his truck up trying to prove his 5.3L will keep up and do everything I’m doing. He doesn’t realize that I am toying with him when he leads I stay back and keep the same distance between us and when I lead I watch and when he starts falling back I let off.
I do this because I believe he would blow it up trying to keep ahead or keep up. And the last thing I want to do is drop my camper and go get the car hauler.
scarry thing is this truck 16 years old and I drive it daily about 300-400 miles a week and as the miles run up I don’t see a good replacement choice.
wow I just took my own thread off the tracks.

If there was a hole in this oil line, oil would be spraying all over the engine and you would have a huuwge mess.... (to clean up)

Brother Les, I realized my mistake a couple of days ago but was not near my computer to correct the statement. Hospitals suck, except when they fix things!

I have learned to spend the shortest amount of time that you can in a hospital. Dang near lost my foot because of contaminated 'parts' that the (so-called) 'doc' put in me.... I swear the SOB dropped them on the floor... stepped on them and wiped them off with his snot rag.... I hate hospitals more than I hate truck sDealers....

As for the oil line.... it was my belief that you knew better and it was a oooppps post, but once the post is submitted and 'edit' time is over, very hard to go back and change the statement and reclarify them.

The Brotherhood hopes you are well and running on all cylinders.

Blessings

Thank you for the well wishes. They had to go in and tweak with the old ticker but all went very well.
