Well I finally got around to doing my coolant flush and switch to EC-1 coolant. I was planning on doing the Restore flush, but after draining the coolant I decided to also do a VC-9 flush. The truck has been at high idle for 30 minutes so far on the Restore. So my plan is to flush out the Restore today and finish with the VC-9 tomorrow . The coolant that came out looked nasty.
Well I am donexcited for the day. It took about 5 or 6 flushes to get the water to come out clear. So there is water in the truck for tonight, and tomorrow I finish with VC-9 and distilled water. Then new hoses thermostat and degas bottle along with Rotella ELC. I will post more pics of the process tomorrow.
Well been driving around doing errands and when I came home and look into the degas bottle, mud again so I guess more flushing tomorrow instead. I would like the water to stay a little clear before adding coolant.
I never got my drains as clear as water going in. No contaminants, no junk, just a slight yellow tint.
I’d back flush the heater core if you haven’t - I still had some chemicals in it even though I ran at high idle or on the road for hours with the heat on high. I also backflushed through both the EGR and radiator return hoses to the degas.
I hope you get yours wrapped up soon. Mine was a rolling two week event and I still wasn’t 100% satisfied.
When I did my major flush back in 2009 time frame I did double flushes with Restore and Restore +, then mass quantities of city water before a few of distilled. I set up hose connections so I could backflush the heater core, but also could just have the garden hose bring new water in and old water out to the home sewer drain. The concentration at that point was low enough to use the drain. But at a rate of 5gal per minute and at least an hour running, there was a lot of water passing through. You have to adjust the water flow so you don't vent the cap.
Well continued with my flushing today. The first drain this morning came out pretty reddish, but that was tap water from my flushed yesterday. I did two tap water flushed this morning followed by 5 distilled water flushes. They still are pinkish but have gotten much clearer, if that make sense . In the firat pic the jugs are the first restore flush, followed the two tap water flushes from this morning, then flush 1 thru 4 of distilled water. Flush 5 is in the truck until next week when I have time to finish with replacing the thermostat and hoses. The second pic shows the clarity of flush #4.
I finished my flush this morning, well actually I just drain my 5th distilled water flush. I replaced a bunch hoses, degas bottle and thermostat. Filled it up with Rotella ELC and started her to check for leaks. None found, topped off the with distilled to 1/2" below the max fill line. Best part is the thermostat works now and the temp got up to 192 as opposed to 170 to 180 before.
Mine is a mishimoto from ficmrepair IIRC and it certainly pulls out a lot of crap. Polecats like the hoses though, and my temporary repair has been holding up for quite some time now...
UGH!! The saga continues, I finished all my flushing and replacing the cooling components and I came out to two leaks under the truck. Well the first one was an easy fix, I just had to retighten the lower hose clamp. The second one is the pain, I crawled under the truck to find it and I did. I guess all the flushing and clean broke lose the junk that was keeping the radiator sealed up. Anyways, it is leaking from a crack in the lower tank above one of transmission cooler lines. I thought it might be the fitting but after wiping the area clean, the leak is definitely coming from above it. So I ordered a new radiator and geuss I'll be putting it in tomorrow. Short of it new heater core and oil cooler, I am going to end up witha whole new cooling system. Funny thing about the radiator ordered the OE from Rockauto and it was shipped straight from a Ford distribution center.
Lower hose clamp - every time I've done a flush it leaks, I retighten, it stays good.
Seems like your flush found the weak link in the radiator before a heavy load and steep climb found it big-time.
Well the new radiator is in and hooked back up. Filled with the coolant I drained, and I was able to finish a test drive and check my deltas after everything. Right now after fully warming the truck up and doing a 20 mintue drive at 65 MPH my deltas were 10 to 11 degrees. Actually about 1 to degrees higher then before I started. Now I just need to order and install a coolant filter.

Mirrors my experience and deltas. I am planning on having my cooler changed along with an EGR “upgrade”, so I’m not terribly concerned. Luckily my towing delta maintained a similar changed and didn’t shoot thru the roof.
