There are no serial (VIN) numbers marked on parts on FoMoCo vehicles prior to the late 1980's. Numbers matching is GM thing.

thanks for the reply. She has to check serial numbers as part of the 68a inspection i need for my title transfer.

i figured the engine didnt have one on it but my original bill of sale from Ivy Russel from 1956 lists a serial number for the transmission though.

Is it a serial number (VIN), or the ID number stamped on (and for) the trans case?

Is this a car or a truck?

This is a car. Ford-O-Matic.

the number wrote on the line that says transmission serial number is different from the vin number wrote above on the engine serial number line.

What year is the car, the '56 in your avatar pic?

The VIN contains 10 (thru 1959) or 11 (1960/80) digits, the last 5 or 6 is the numerical sequence of assembly aka the serial number.

yes the '56. On my bill of sale it says "Unit Serial Number (Engine No)" with the complete vin wrote out.

the other line is "Ford-O-Matic Serial Number" and it has a completly different number. I dont have that number with me though but i know its not the same as the vin number losted above.

Ok im looking at the original bill of sale and I see what they did. I typed out the so called "serial number" and thought damn 3525E sounds familiar as hell. I went and looked and that is the information from the vin tag on Body 73C, Color D, Trim H, Production Code 3A3525E. That's why all the hypens. But now I wonder who wrote it in though because this is wrote in with pencil while the rest is typed out on a type writer. Might need to ask my mom if she thinks this could be my grandfathers hand writing.

Well all is well. The officers came out yesterday which I didn't expect since they said Tuesday. They went over the whole car couldn't find the serial number where their paperwork said it would be they talked a bit and agreed its not stolen nothing is out of place and they just signed off on it. Now onto next step gotta wait till after Tuesday for the Form 68A gets transmitted from the police department to the DMV then I can go in and get the paperwork for the bond amount.
