I've heard the easy technique is to pull the hubs and drop them in a bath of AT fluid for a day. Then set them somewhere to drain off for another day, then reinstall. Basically anytime they get submerged in water, or annually in wet places.

What's the opinion on that?

I've never heard of that. I off-road a lot (especially in the desert) and would think that all the ATF residue inside would attract dust/dirt/sand. No bueno IMO.

I always took them apart and cleaned them per guzzle's procedure once a year and never had a problem with them. I've been through more wheel hubs than I care to count receipts for but never had a problem with my auto-locking hubs. I was still on the originals when I sold them.

Thanks for the input! It does sound like creating a dust magnet. The guy who recommended that was a Pennsylvania hillbilly and maybe such things work better in that environment. He did have some odd ideas. Once when working on his 'clapped out' '80's Ford Escort we finally got it started, only to have him panic and yell "Shut it down! It's running backwards!"

I went to manual hubs, and as long as they engage smoothly I'll leave them alone.
