Hey guys, my helper removed my distributor to replace vacuum advance but he didn't mark it very well. Now the engine won't start and I.m wondering how to verify my paranoia. Also, does the #1 plug supposed to face front of engine ? Distributor cap is my first concern. Hopefully I can get her started by repositioning the "D" cap.
What engine? On V8 the cap only fits one way afaik.
Start from scratch might be best. Roll the engine over by hand till the #1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. then drop the distributor in with the rotor pointing at the #1 terminal location.
FWIW the distributor doesn't care which post is number one. You can pick any post and set the rotor to it at TDC and then set firing order off of that.
It is the 292 Y block, even with all this good info I still need to know if distributor cap has #1 plug wire facing front of engine
No. There's only one way the cap should fit, and the OEM type cap should also have a "1" embossed at the terminal. Here is the way it is arranged. Yellow line shows #1 plug wire and terminal. 1 & 6 terminals are basically in line with the two spring clips that secure the cap on the housing. I use the #1 spring clip for a reference to align the rotor when stabbing the distributor.
Remove wires one at a time see which one does not change Engine Tone. That will be the Miss, After you double check your wires and Firing order of course.

Well, everything checked out, ok, with firing ang wires being in right place. I'm concerned as to whether or not the distributor was re-installed a tooth or two off. Not sure what would take place. Could that cause a miss ????
