Good afternoon gentlemen, been hanging in the 61-66 forum for years, but I thought I'd wander over here and tap your brains for some transmission issues with the 2007 Sport Trac. It was my wife's daily driver until this January when she bought a 2018 JK. It has 197K on the clock and has been relatively trouble free for the last 10 years. I figured it owed me nothing so I was going to drive it 'til it died, but I didn't expect it this soon. I drove it on and off if I needed the pickup for a few months, in June I was going to go to work and headed down the road, it shifted from 1st to 2nd, then shifted 3rd and was fine for a couple of seconds then every light in the dash came on and it went into neutral. I pulled over, and started off again, all the lights went out except the traction control light, the wrench, and the check engine light but it would only shift 1st to 2nd, and wouldn't attempt 3rd. I drove it back home and parked it, went out a couple of times after that just to see if things would change, but it never went past 2nd again. Fast forward to today, it's been sitting for 3 months now and the battery was stoned dead so I put the charger on it for a few hours and decided to play with it to see if I could figure anything out. I drove down the street, it did the 1st to 2nd shift, shifted normally into 3rd, then all the lights came on again and it went into neutral again. And again after that it would only do 1st and 2nd and doesn't attempt to shift again. I then took it down a dirt road around the corner from my house and played with 4wd and low range, and it stayed the same, so I put it back on 2wd and ran the road up to about 5,000 rpm with no shift to 3rd. I then stopped, shut it down, restarted it and it shifted all 4 gears normally like nothing was wrong. I drove it around for about 1/2 hour with no issues, then I stopped to take a turn and when I took off it did the 1-2 shift and stayed there.
Anyone have a clue, I'm thinking computer issue or bad plug someplace. thanx Eric
Regardless, you need to get to a Ford dealer or some shop that can read transmission codes. The 5 speed auto is a troublesome beast that can be coaxed into a long life with gentle use, regular fluid changes and sheer luck. Sometimes an additive will help. (cured the flare between 2nd an d 3rd in my replacement trans)
It's all guesswork until you get the codes. Then it's educated guesswork.
You are looking at $3K if you make the right deal with the right trans shop. ymmv on that.
