Removing my cap

Thought I would share this. I finally gave in and admitted I could remove the cap and trade to a 5th wheel from a travel trailer. I used 2 hand crank winches with auto brakes, similar in style to a boat trailer winch, with stainless cable. I back in, jack up cap, slide in boards, hook on cable, and winch up. Still fine tuning, but works well.

Looks good! It's great to be handy.

I did a similar system in my garage using the winch mounted on the truck to lift the topper.

Nice! I went even cheaper and put my DW on the other side and lift on the count of 3.

I'm not sure that would even be possible if I took the time to clean out the boxes. Cap just weighs too much.

Piece of advice....clamp it down to what you have it sitting on. I didn't one time after I pulled mine off of my truck. We had a big storm that night with a bunch of wind. It picked up my long bed, fiberglass camper shell and threw it 50 feet. Busted out 2 windows and cracked the fiberglass. Lesson learned.
