I have a 54 f100 with a 239 cu in motor engine was rebuilt so i,am told . the problem oil run out of down spout removed the cover no filter ordered one today will this help ! Any ideas on other things i need to look for ? Thanks Mike
Temporarily stuff a rag in the end of the breather tube and remove the oil-fill cap. Start the engine and manually accelerate the engine rapidly while looking at the oil fill hole. If you get a considerable "puff" of smoke/air/fumes out of this hole while the engine is accelerating you probably have excessive blow-by. Also if oil droplets come out while the engine is accelerating you have excessive blow by. (Check the dip-stick to make sure it is not over-filled first.) Excessive blow-by will cause excessive ammounts of oil to come out the breather tube.(Blow-by is compression pressure getting past the rings under load and into the crankcase) You say you were "told" the engine was rebuilt? If it was a proper rebuild it shouldn't have a blow-by problem. Possibly, the rings are sticky from sitting in storage a long time. Drive the vehicle with high detergent oil in it about 100 miles and then change the oil. If the rings are sticking from storage, this will probably free them up. If you still have excessive blow-by and large ammounts of oil coming out the breather you have an engine problem involving rings or possibly exhaust valve guides.
A SMALL ammount of oil coming out the breather is normal. Maybe one or two drops per 100 miles is completly normal. This ammount won't even show on the dip-stick. If you are loseing, or using more than about 1-quart in 500 miles, this is excessive.
Thanks Bob I checked the oil fill spout white smoke when you rev the engine .I changed the oil 5ot. with new filter so don't think its over full .truck is not ready for the road yet .The guy i got it from said the engine was rebuilt over a year ago . any thing i can put in to help the rings or the valves ? Thanks Mike
