So Friday when I got in the truck to go to work she cranked kind of slow and I thought great starter or battery is going.
So I got to work and threw the load tester on it and it showed decent for a 6 year old battery... cranked it and it was even slower than before so great starter is bad. So at the end of my shift I hit the key and cranked but not fast enough to fire off. Good thing I thought ahead and parked facing down hill, clutch pop and off we go.
Pulled the starter off Saturday and took it to be tested and it blew the fuse on oriellys machine. Ok that's bad. 140 is what they wanted for one, little step there. So I held off thinking I had one from a 5 speed to c6 swap I did a while ago. But it was the older big body starter so I didn't use it. Monday I took the winter beater to work and tore the starter apart. It was full of clutch dust and oil film. So I cleaned that out and adjusted the brushes, put some drylube on the gear reduction set and bolted it back up Tuesday. Hit the key and she spun right up and idled.
So you give speed guys maybe next time you might just need to clean the starter out.
Great save. New starters ARE pricey. Had to replace one on my 93 this past winter. Only got it started on the job site with my apprentice turning the key and me whaling on the starter with my linemans pliers.
Not going to lie, it will need replacing in the next year to year and a half. Two of the four brushes are worn to the point of max adjustment and look nonreplacable as the lead is riveted to the case. But the bushings and gear set still look good.
