1989 Ranger Brake light issue
Helping my nephew on his '89, no brake lights or hazard lights.
He has a Chiltons, doesn't help me much.
Thing is, the 15amp Fuse(#1) doesn't get power until the key is turned on, even with key on, no brake lights.
No hack job to the harness that I can find.
What I need is a real wiring harness diagram,/schematic...any help?
Chiltons that he has just show's the 15amp fus "Hot at all times"...then to the BL switch , etc...not a lot of help, I need color codes, etc...
Thanks.
Edit: Ohmed out the switch, works fine. tail lights work, turn signals work.

Is it fixed yet.
I had same issue, i did have to replace switch. My ranger is a 94 so not sure it uses same switch. Mine slides over a pin and has a wire harness. So easy to change it can be done in a parking lot in 5 minutes.
I never did extensive testing becaues the truck had a history brake switch replacements. They are super cheap last one under $10 and super easy to change. If I recall a single cotter pin.
On my last of 4 switches I drilled a tiny hole in the red dash and wired in a small red no bezel led light to side of switch going to lights so I would know when switch failed again so I did not need to be told my lights were not working. The light is hardly noticable. If it lights when brake peddle pressed I know swith works.
I think what happens to these switches the early ones anyway is more of a bend in the plate that presses against the rod causing it to not let the switch work. My last one must be built different. It has outlasted first three.

on my 2000 ranger, mine stopped working and it came out to have developed some corrosion inside the lamp socket. after i cleaned that up they started working fine again.
cannot help much with a 1989. my schematics only go back to 1993. But since both are not working, I would first look for a bad ground.
