My brake lights quit working and while troubleshooting I noticed the tail lights/brake light bulbs were getting just a little juice, not enough to see with the lenses on. Next I noticed the dash lights are coming on as soon as the switch at the brake pedal is made. I noticed the brake light switch wires go from the pedal about a foot and enter the main harness bundle. Does anyone have any advice where to look first for this short.
Without saying that the head lamp switch is bad, I would pull the switch and make sure a wire has not pulled from the connector. Note that there are a couple of wires that are spliced together that use the same connector. Make sure they are secure while you are there.
What I do is wrap the harness in tape, then use a plastic zip tie to hold it tight to the connector/switch combo so it can not pop back up if the prongs for the connector can not be made to work.
I would disconnect the harness going to the turn signal switch at the bottom of the column and make sure I was getting power (bright test lamp bulb or DVM) to the switch when the pedal was pressed before it was sent to the turn signal switch.
This will tell you where the problem is (a switch or harness) before replacing components.
You are right. I had one taillight housing still loose when I discovered this problem. That problem is solved now. I can't see how those electons get over to the dash light circuit but I'm also glad I don't have to figure it out.
