i have a 2000 ford E450 6.8L gas burner under a 24' rv. i have always used 5-30w oil and changed every 3-4 thousand miles. the rig has 120,000 miles on it and is using some oil these days. my recent 4,000 mile trip it used 1.5-2.0 quarts. question is could i safely change to 10-30w. thanks barthboy2
Never change to a different oil viscosity due to the engine burning/using oil. The internal tolerances were engineered for a specific weight oil. And correct me if I am wrong but doesn’t the V10 specify 5w-20?
The older ones were 5w30 then they changed it around 02 to 5w20. Sort of unrelated but the 6.2 was ogrinally speced for 5w20 then they changed it to 5w30 after a few years.
yes i have check all the things i could think of. no oil leaking of course and the tail pipe is clean. changed plugs at 100K and the gap was wide but the plugs were clean and looked good.
Has the PCV been replaced? It's a common cause of sudden oil loss in a modular engine. I wouldn't change from the 5w30 if it's made it this far. Also all 6.8 engines are currently specified to run 5w20 and have been since 2001 MY, 5w20 is even used in the F650/750 Trucks.
