While at the local dealer yesterday, I asked the service manager about oil usage in the V-10 motor and what Ford considers excessive... The answer was, "If it uses less than 2 quarts over 3,000 miles, it is still within limits."
My 2001 V-10 has 22,000 miles and uses from 1/2 to 1 quart of oil during the recommended 5,000 mile oil change interval. I am using the synthetic blend 5W20 as specified in the manual. Apparently I'm still well under the usage limits.
My V-10 is always down a little over a quart at 3,000 mile oil change. I have asked the Dealership about this and was told it is ok. I use the same oil as you. I suppose I could add a quart at 2,000 miles if necessary. I don't know where it goes? My 89 inline six even now does not use half a quart between oil changes!
Edmo, are you still in the Air force? Thought you were in Alaska. I'm still in Ketchikan, AK.
My 2001 F250 uses about 1/2 quart between oil changes, but my 1990 Cherokee and 1999 Cherokee don't use any. I still say a new truck should not use any oil.
Yes I'm still in the AF and still flying the mighty C-130 Hercules. Those SOBs decided 4 years in Alaska was too much of a fabulous thing... They sent me to Little Rock, Arkansas of all places!
My sister is a school teacher up there. She & her family just moved this summer from Grayling, Alaska to an island near Ketchikan, so I'll be up to visit in the future.
Is your sister a teacher on Prince of Wales island? Anyway shoot me an email when you come this way and I'll buy you a beer.
I caught five 20+ pound King Salmon yesterday. Those fish wore me out. I filleted them and they are in the smoker now. Email me with your address and I'll send one to ya (if you'd like).
if you're using synthetic oils that could be it, they tend to make a new motor shiny. My uncle made the mistake once of not using regular oil during break-in and had to pull the motor apart to re-hone the cylinders.
Thanks Gang for your input. I am running what the owners manual says to use, 5W-30. I wonder if I went to a heavier weight of oil if that would help? I do love the performance of the V10. Considering the Class C it is equipped with 10 Mpg is not too bad.
