Ok, good to hear it was clean inside & no debris was found. So you also haven't checked to see if the computer is sending a OD lock up signal either??? If not, do that while checking the solenoid. Will be interesting to hear what you find.
Is the solenoid accessible from the outside of the trans or the inside? One thing to note, this thing starts in all gears and I don’t have reverse lights. There is a 4 prong plug under the hood, drivers side. That I had to disconnect to get it to stop blowing the #5 fuse which is for the turn signals and back up lights. Not sure if any of this is related, just more info.
Why not consider coming by a tranny manual. If you don't want to spring about $30 for one, like here https://www.atsg.us/atsg/ford-manuals-1/a4ld.html, or maybe inquire if your local library has one to check out, or a subscription that you could use on their computer to access the info you need. The solenoids are on the valve body inside the tranny, so you were looking up at it when you removed the tranny pan.
So I have dropped the pan again and checked the solenoid, there are actually 2. Both have around 30 ohms resistance. There are 3 wires and no combination have any voltage when the key is on and in gear, if that makes a difference. Also as I mentioned before, this truck starts in all gears/no natural safety switch. The last thing, when I first got the truck and was checking things out, the external plug for the solenoid was unplugged. I didn’t know what it was at the time.
One more thing, there is a 4 prong plug under the hood that I have to keep unplugged so the turn signals work. When plugged in, it blows the #5 fuse which is for the reverse lights and turn signals.
Not sure if any or all is related to my overdrive problem
TRS = Transmission Range Sensor, on newer vehicles its called the DTR = Digitial Range Sensor, anyway its the electrical switch on the side of the tranny, to which the shift cable attaches that electrically tells the vehicle computer/controller what gear we've selected. It also switches on the back-up lights!!!!
The OD switch on the shift lever is known to act out when its internal contacts corrode & corrupt its electrical connection. It can be removed, disassembled, cleaned, lubed & reused.
My trans doesn’t have a TRS.
Thanks anyway for the possibility. Further research tells me that there is no applied voltage while it is not in motion. There are 2 solenoids, one is the 3-4 shift and the other is for the TC lockup. I think I am going to replace both while I have the pan off. Will have to wait till Monday to try and get them locally or I will have to order them. I am not in any big hurry, this is a spare vehicle for now.
I will run this test after I replace the solenoids if it still doesn’t work. I don’t want to put it back together and take it apart again. I am almost 60 and work 40hrs or more a week. I have considered the possibility of it being the ECM. I am also going to chase my reverse light short as well this weekend.
thanks

I keep forgetting this is a 88 we're talking about, not a 98 tranny!!! lol
Update. So I swapped both solenoids, still no overdrive. I have not preformed the voltage test. The link for the test is on a 92 explorer, not sure if they had the same trans (A4LD). I know that in the video, the 92 had a 4 wire plug, mine has 3 at the trans. If the problem is internal, I may take it somewhere.
