Rust Removal

Hi again,
I have another question regarding my derusting project of my 99 Ford F350. The truck is originally from upstate NY where the winters are rough and as a result, there is quite a bit of rust on the frame. What is the best way to remove and prevent rust in the future? I've seen people use air chisels to knock the rust off and others use a wire brush or grinding wheel. Any advice or suggestions? Thanks!

Wire wheel or air needle scaler.

For coating, POR15 or Chassis Saver is a good option. It binds to rust. Take your time and follow the prep work steps. Apply multiple layers of paint. I spray bar and chain oil underneath every year to help prepare for salt season. Seems to do a decent job and very reasonable in price.

Bar and chain oil...that's a pretty good idea. What do you actually use to spray it on? One of those garden sprayer things? Can't imagine it would come out of a regular spray bottle very well.

I used a Schutz gun I got from Monstaliner. It can be used for oil, bed liner, undercoat, basically any viscous liquid. It helps if you warm the oil jug in hot water first but it will spray ok at room temp. I set my regulator to 40-50 psi. Be generous in the application. And leave the truck in your yard for a week or so so the excess can drip off.

I spray all body rust areas too. Cab corners, bed sides, doors, it works great every where. And tractor supply usually has it for $7 a gallon in the fall.

So living in WNY, I just got done doing this with my 01’ 250.... The truck has been nothing but good to me, but NY take a toll on any vehicle regardless the upkeep.
My frame had a factory undercoating on it from 01’ when my father bought it. Over the years he maintained it quite well, but also used it throughout the years.
I decided to go through it and completely redo the frame with a rust convertor and undercoating. Best tools will be a grinder, air scaler, and wire brushes. After much research I decided on Corroseal instead of POR15. Granted POR15 works well and I have used it on numerous projects prior, Corroseal works just as good and half the price! (~$60/gal on Amazon).
Take your time, prep is key, and wear a good respirator or mask and gloves.

After air scaler, power wash, Corroseal, and rubberized undercoating. Good for another 17 yrs!!

I'm in the POR15 camp. Stuff is amazing. Never used Corroseal, probably won't as I'm hooked on POR15
