Please see the image attached. On the front of the block there is a red circled hole. It is a 1/4" diameter. Is this a freeze plug? I don't have a plug and coolant comes out of this hole. Where can someone get a 1/4" freeze plug if this is what goes in the hole?
The timing chain cover nor the water pump cover up this hole...
I'm not that familiar with that engine, but if it takes a concave plug there would be a shoulder inside the hole. Is the hole threaded at all? The smallest concave plugs are 3/8", and the smallest cup plugs are 1/2".
It is smooth, no threads, and exactly 1/4" diameter. Goes back in at least 1/2". Blow compressed air in it and air is heard out of the water pump outlet....
It is a Stock 223. Stock front Cast cover (for a F100 truck), for the cam chain. if you have a 223 you will see this hole, and it is not covered up by anything... Hole is below the water pump but to the right hand side of the cam cover.
The attached photo shows pretty well the front cover does not cover this hole up.
Spot on... That is it. No idea what the hole is for, or why they would have needed it to machine the original block....
All the pictures that I found show nothing covering it. Do you know what was in it before? Did you have the block hot tanked? There may have been an aluminum plug in there.
I am sure something was in there, just not sure what.... Yes the block was cleaned...
If it had an aluminum plug, it's gone now. I would consider drilling it out to 21/64", tapping 1/8" NPT, and installing an internal hex pipe plug if nothing else works.
